Can Luxaflex window coverings improve sleep?

INSPIRATION

Getting a good night’s sleep helps our brains and bodies function at their best, and gives us the energy we need to get the most out of our day.

Our environment also plays a vital role in how we sleep. Rooms that are too warm, bright or loud can affect the quality of our sleep, and therefore, our memory, energy levels, brain function, and overall wellbeing.

Light, in particular, can influence our bodies’ circadian rhythm. According to the Sleep Foundation, as light disappears in the evening, our bodies release melatonin, which is a hormone that induces drowsiness. And when the sun rises in the morning, our bodies release cortisol, which promotes energy and alertness.

When designing the bedrooms in our homes, it’s therefore important we pay very close attention to the flow of air and light – ensuring we can block out natural light when we want to sleep, and let it in when we’re ready to rise. The way in which we design window coverings can play a key role in creating optimal sleep zones in the home.

When doing so, here are some of the top things to think about:

Style and configuration

There are many different ways in which people like to control the flow of light into their sleeping spaces.

Many choose to install coverings from the Luxaflex® Softshades Collection, which includes several functional and stylish solutions. Softshades are a relatively new style of blind, and function as somewhat of a screen – letting light through, but still ensuring privacy.

A popular option within this collection is the Pirouette® Shadings, which are softly curved horizontal fabric vanes attached to a sheer backing, and which provide an enhanced measure of controlling light and privacy. They have a classic look, and the delicate folds appear to float above the window, allowing light to filter through, or to be completely closed for total privacy.

Silhouette® Shadings are another great option - made from an innovative material that allows you to see outside, while still restricting the view from the outside to the inside. They are made from 100% anti-static, dust-resistant polyester, and are durable and easy to clean. They also come in two opacities - translucent and room-darkening.

For larger windows, Luminette® Privacy Sheers are a practical and stylish option. These subtly curved and timeless vertical window coverings rotate for privacy and light control. Choose translucent fabrics to diffuse light; or dark fabrics to restrict light and provide privacy.

Luxaflex® PolySatin Shutters are also a great option for bedrooms. Completely adjustable, they allow you to fully control the solar energy entering your windows and doors. Coupled with polyresin's low conductivity, they greatly reduce heat exchange. PolySatin Shutters are impervious to moisture and heat, and will not blister, peel or fade, ensuring a quality finish for years to come.

Regardless of the style you choose, you have the confidence of knowing that all Luxaflex® window coverings are completely made to measure.

Fabric choice

Once you have thought about the types of window coverings you want to have in your bedrooms, it’s then important to think about the type of fabric you want them to be made in.

At Luxaflex, our fabric options include blockout, translucent, sheer, sunscreen and external. For bedrooms, many people tend to opt for blockout fabric. However, a consultant can always guide you in choosing the option that’s best for the rooms in your home.

Mode of operation

Luxaflex® offers a range of different modes of operation which you can select from depending on your budget, style and preferences. This can include wand-operation, retractable or pull cord loop systems, EasyRise, LiteRise or ULTRAGLIDE® lifting systems, as well as Luxaflex’s exclusive battery-powered Qmotion technology, or the revolutionary app-driven PowerView® Motorisation system.

Luminette® Privacy Sheers, for instance, are a popular option for many bedrooms. They can be drawn open like curtains with the use of a cord, or rotated like blinds with a simple twist of the wand, all from a single control. Or, with Powerview® Motorisation, you can lift them with a remote control or even your smartphone at the touch of a button. You can even program your window coverings to open or close at specific times of the day, with some shades even including temperature sensors for automated operation.

Extra dark options

In some instances, you might be looking to create extra dark spaces – if someone in your family is a shift worker, or if you have young children, or those who are particularly sensitive to light.

To help you outsmart the sun and enjoy a better night’s sleep, Duette® LightLock Shades combine the industry leading Duette® Shades with the patented LightLock System to achieve unparalleled darkness. Featuring a unique U-Shaped side channel designed to absorb, deflect and block incoming light from seeping through into the room. LightLock blends seamlessly into the window frame preventing light leakage that is inherent with all reveal mounted blockout blinds and is a perfect solution for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms, where maximum darkness is required.
